Hanx Writer App Reviews

Awesome - but with issues

After using the app for quite a bit of time now, I can say that I still very much enjoy it for its simplicity. However, whenever using a Bluetooth keyboard with the app, it consistently crashes unless I type as slow as possible. Please fix. This app is not to be considered as a replacement for a regular word processing app, but is still delightful to use for its nostalgia factor or even to just have a different "feel" when typing. Just as you compose text differently when writing long hand than you would when using a modern word processing program, this app can make you think a little differently about what you are writing. You fall into the rhythm of the keys and the ideas begin to flow (at least for me). My only suggestions for improvement would be the inclusion of tab stops (perhaps in the form of preset page margins that can be selected) and enhancing the animation by animating the ribbon. I think it would be a nice graphical element to have the ribbon behave a little more like it would on a real typewriter, with the letters appearing and scrolling away as you type. Totally not functional, but something I would love to watch - just as I loved to watch it back in the day.

I love writing with this app.

This is a great app. Using it with a BT keyboard on my iPad, set up at a desk or table, is everything I love about typewriters and nothing I dont. This is my favorite app for writing, no matter where the work finally ends up for editing or publication.

Bluetooth Keyboard = Crash Writer

I love the app. I really want to invest in the in-app purchases for once, but currently the application crashes hard when youre typing with Bluetooth. ON THE POSITIVE SIDE. Despite well over 30 crashes within 2 hours of writing every time I opened the app back up all of my work minus one or two words were in tact. I appreciate this app, the sound of the keys clanking plus Do Not Disturb mode create a really appealing workspace. Now please focus on stability with Bluetooth Keyboards.

Not usable as a typing keyboard

Wow. Looked good when I first opened it and typed in the app. After buying the option to use it as a default keyboard it typed at a rate of one letter every 3-5 seconds. Useless. So if you give them full access (to personal info that you type- credit card numbers, emails, everything) the type write starts working normally. These people are data miners. Delete.

Excellent.

The Hanx writer is a very good typewriter app, it is the very best even with beginning to do some word processing, and therefore it is helpful, and useful. Before the computer, there was a typewriter, but now you can have those memories, and more with this app. So try it, and youll see why it is the very best so far.

Major Issues since iOS 9

Updated review: I loved this app but it has some major issues since iOS 9. The app crashes frequently during midstream of typing. The app wont let you navigate to anyone place on a blank page to start typing, like a typical type writer. This is another bug that was introduced from the latest fix. The app emulates the typewriter and the sound of the typewriter beautifully. It delivers the experiencing of writing with a traditional typewriter and lets me focus on the creative process without getting distracted with the frill and fuss of a word processor features like formatting, bolding, etc. ----- It does exactly as advertise. The app is beautiful and the design holds true to Tom Hanks vision -- an app that emulates the classic typewriter. I have used this app for about 3 months now, primarily when I want to focus on writing and not worry about formatting, bolding, bullets, fonts, size, etc. All these enhancement of modern word processor is terrific for creating a finished (presentable) product, but these rich features are also a great distraction to the central task -- writing. This app is terrific. If you like writing, get it! *** One request to the developers -- Please could we add double/triple space feature? My old type writer does, and I miss it. ***

Not without issues

UPDATE: I reluctantly continued using Hanx Writer, as I didnt have much of a choice, because Google Docs functionality has taken a turn for the worse. The crashes continued, yet I persisted. Today, I began writing a document that is extremely important to me, to only have the first page of it disappear, and even though it showed in the document preview, it wouldnt appear, particularly after multiple restarts. Now, I have to completely restart the process, from a different app. ADDITIONAL INFO: This app will not properly communicate with other apps, such as notes or google drive, so dont even think about saving your work elsewhere! You will be screwed. I cannot believe I wasted $5 on the in-app purchases. ________________________________________ I love this app, and its nostalgic feel! However, using my Bluetooth keyboard causes it to crash if Im typing too furiously. It seems to crash more often with the add-on typewriters, rather than the main one it comes with. All in all, its good but not without frustration from app crashes.

This app Rocks

I mean seriously, it is like the only legitimate typewriter app out there. I have produced some really nice documents that have an outstanding typewriter like appearance.

I Wish….

This app is fun to use but sometimes the screen acts up and it doesn’t show where the cursor is on my iPhone 6s Plus……….. However, if the developers can try this……i wish that this app is available for the laptops. Even if the sounds of each typewriter not the actual typewriter on the screen is fine. I really wish for that

Keeps crashing w Bluetooth keyboards

Used to love this app but for some reason its broken. I dont type on my iPad. I always use a keyboard when I type. If I type to fast the application crashes. Its frustrating when you get into a groove and suddenly the app closes on you at random. Please fix this problem.

Fun to type

This is a fun way to type!

Lacks basic typewriter functions!

Love the idea and the look/sounds are quite good. I understand that it isnt intended to have all the functions of a modern word processor, but it lacks even the basic typewriter features on my 1930s typewriter. The app has no tab key. No caps lock. You cant advance to the center of the page and then backspace to center text. You cant backspace and then key over the previous strike to create special characters (like the old school way of make a division sign--type a colon, then backspace and type a hyphen) A fun toy, good basic text tool, but doesnt deliver on basic typewriter functionality.

Fubar on iPad pro

No sound, within the app nor the external keyboard. The external keyboard scale is really small and locks up after typing a few chars. Original review: Enjoyable app thats satisfying to type on. I purchased on a whim and am glad I did. What seemed gimmicky at first glance truly did add something for me when entering things via keyboard. I also like that they didnt just add animations and sounds to a word processor.. The limits mimic those on the real deal. Simplicity+look+sound= win PDF export is nice to have too.

FoxNavarski Collection

Hey, Frank collected them and you digitized and put them online! :-)

Constantly Crashes!

Revising this review to ONE STAR because of the abysmal tech support, who have known about its issues for almost a year without doing anything about it. The app wouldnt open for weeks after iOS9 came out. After the ONE update Hitcents released since, it opens now but crashes CONSTANTLY. Like every few sentences. Nice. Easily the buggiest app I own. I cant believe Tom Hanks would put his name on this.

Great for in-the-moment writing

I am always in need of someplace to write my ideas or continue a scene on the go and this app gives me that freedom to capture things the way I need to. The different typewriters with their unique text look and sounds lets me be visual as well as keeping me in the old-style mode that I prefer to computers blank screens. The paid version also allows you to store multiple documents. Love this app and use it daily when my notebook is not handy. The only downfall for me is that it does not have autocorrect, but that is advertised up front as being more authentic to the typewriter environment.

Great for most but...

I love this app. But it crashes a lot and you cannot use the keyboard outside of the app on the iPad Pro.

Using it as I type...

The app itself is pretty bland and I dont use it much. However, I love the feel of the keyboard and it feels like a typewriter. This helps me write during the times when I feel stuck and it is fun to use when Im in the mood for it. However, I was disappointed to know that I needed to pay $0.99 just to have sounds when using the keyboard outside the application but it was tolerable. The keyboard is fun to use and feels almost like a typewiriter. I just wished that I had the option to use the auto-capitalization, and auto-correct when using this as keyboard outside the app. I know that typewriters do not do that but this is a simulated typewriter. This would help greatly when the keyboard is used with other apps. Overall, the app is okay but the keyboard is great to use. This app just needs a few adjustments and it is good to go.
